Nagoan
has many rice and oil mills & the jute and sugar sector have
made a mark. Many small-scale industrial units have developed. Proper
geographical exploration of the alluvial tracts may yield valuable
oil-bearing tertiary formations. Agriculture is the predominant
economic activity of the people. Next to agriculture, handloom and
weaving is the main industrial activity. Major crops grown in the
district are paddy, potato, mustard, jute, sugarcane, wheat, oilseeds
and vegetables. The main plantation and horticultural crops are
banana, pineapple, betel nut, coconut, etc.
Morigaon
The Small Scale Industries in Morigaon have a vast potential for
self-employment and economic development of Assam. This district
has acquired pre-eminent position in the economic structure of the
country. The contribution of the sector both towards the economic
advancement/development and removal of economic disparties among
cross section of the society has been tremendous.
Lakimpur
is one of the rural areas and is fully dependant on agriculture.
98% of the total live in rural areas and about 45% of the total
population are workers of which
60% are cultivators,
30% are marginal workers,
about 4% are agricultural labourers ,
another 4% are engaged in trade & commerce, transport &
communication,
1% in breeding livestock, forestry, fishing etc and
only 1.62% is dependant on manufacturing, processing & repairing
in household industry.
Karbi
Anglong has an agricultural economy and paddy is the main crop.
Except for the valleys, the people follow the jhum system of cultivation.
Although the district is abundant in raw materials only a few industries
have come up.
Golaghat has an agro based economy. Tea, Rice and Sugarcane
are the main agricultural crops grown in the district..Tea is the
largest agro based industry and there are 63 large Tea gardens producing
about 20000MT of tea per year. Moreover, emergence of small tea
growers in the agrarian scene has heralded a new revolution in the
district. Small scale tea cultivation has got considerable popularity
here because of high profit in comparison with other high land crops.
It has caught the fancy of educated unemployed youths to take the
tea as there profession by choice rather than by circumstance.Rearing
and reeling of Muga and Endi, making of Japi (headgear) and earthen
Potential and extraction of Agaru oil are the cottage industries
prevail in Golaghat district. Quality Muga silk and Agaru oil in
Golaghat district are considered as superior.
Jorhat
has a number of small scale and cottage industries in the field
of cane work and bamboo work , silver jewellery , furniture making
, brass smithy , umbrella making, soap manufacturing to name a few
.In case of big and medium industries in the district, Tea continues
to occupy a major place. Other industries like Manufacturing of
food productsmanufacturing of Non-metallic mineral productsand manufacturing
of wood & wood products, furniture's and fixtures occupy a significant
place in the district's economy
Dibrugarh
is the Tea City of the North East. The other industries in this
districts are Oil and Gas.
Darrang
In Darrang the main polyester industry is the Prag Bosimi Synthetics
Ltd. located at Sipajhar, which employs a large number of skilled
and unskilled labour. There are also a few tea factories.
Barapeta
The main crops of the district are paddy, wheat, mustard, tea, lentil,
green gram, black gram, potato, and vegetables. Major horticultural
product are banana, coconut, areca nut, papaya, lemon etc. Beside
this large numbers of crops are grown in the district which are
exported to other districts including Guwahati are tomato, cabbage,
lentils, gourd, cauliflower, brinjal cucumber, pumpkin, ladysfinger,
bean etc during peak-season of the vegetables.
Karimganj
Economy of Karimganj district is agrarian in character with as much
as 60% of the active workforce engaged in cultivation. Together
with Farming, Livestock, Fishery, Forestry etc, the Primary sector
of economy engages a total of 68% of active workforce . The Primary
sector of this district also includes plantation of tea and rubber
, fishing , livestock , poultry and forestry . Secondary sector
constitutes Oil and Gas and Tertiary sector encompasses Construction
, Trade & Commerce Transport and communication
