Last year, New Line Cinema (belonging to the Time Warner group) made history of sorts by "launching" online promos. of their forthcoming movie "Snakes on a Plane" nearly 9 months prior to release date (August, 2006). By itself, this is not unusual - except for the extra long lead time.

This pre-launch promotion (as is today's trend) was an avalanche of video & audio clips. Along with synopsis, these were showered on myriad audio/video sites, news portals & blogs. Accompanied by the expected ringtones, wallpapers et al.

And the result? A large number of blogs, social networking sites & portals started magnifying the hype. Some sites even generated online events based on the promotion material.

Net result: Online fans including bloggers started making suggestions about the content. Including new scenes, changes in language and even proposed dialogues!

Final result: The producers actually re-opened shooting to incorporate a number of the suggestions & proposals. Surely a first for cinema !

What is News?
On another level, leading U.S. based web-site for technology news Diggs.com has recently announced its decision to extend its scope to include general (non technology) content including news & video. But with a difference.

Instead of hosting a set of content based on its "editorial" team, Diggs.com will instead, make it easy for its 3,00,000 subscribers and (millions of casual surfers) to vote on the new content - which will comprise of both news as well as non-news (e.g video).

The content will be ranked purely on the number of votes it polled during a period, making the consumer decide what is newsworthy or simply worthy of hosting.
Promising to change (if not redefine) the concept of news as we know it.
