The
Beeb has decided to "unlock" its long tail of huge radio & television content
with video search, no less. One of a long list of projects with IBM, project "Marvel"
will apply video search technology to BBC television & radio content. The project
will use a product of IBM Research (code "Marvel"), which promises to detect &
match patterns present in images as well as video and make them "visually searchable".
Considering BBC's humongous TV & radio content spanning decades of broadcasting,
it will be interesting to see what it achieves. And how fast.
Video search
technology may be the polish with which mainstream media could regain its shine.
So, we can expect big media corps to play "follow the leader".
On a lighter
note, since the Beeb's project kicks off with video search for kid's content,
it may adversely affect the next generation's already poor vocabulary !
Video
Search Engines Although video search is the future of online video : today's
hottest sector on the Web, it is surprising that currently none of the big search
engines have anything to offer when it comes to video search.
So
it is natural that IBM's initiatives in video search technology will have some
effect on the dominance of current search engine giants like Google, Yahoo! &
Microsoft.

Singingfish
: World's First Multimedia Search Engine
Launched
in 2000, Singingfish was designed
as an audio/video search engine that worked with Windows Media Player as well
as RealPlayer. And powered video search for video sites like WindowsMedia.com,
AOL Video, Real Guide, Dogpile, Metacrawler and of course Singingfish.com.
One
of the earliest search engines dedicated to multimedia content and a clear leader,
Singingfish was acquired by AOL
in 2003.
As
of date, AOL has integrated Singingfish audio/video search service into AOL Search. |
| Although
the time is ripe for Google, Yahoo! & the other major search engines to enter
the video search space, it is AOL who has assumed leadership position by integrating
2 leading multimedia search engines Truveo & Singingfish into AOL Video.
Microsoft's
adCenter Labs
demonstrates some technologies for video search :
* "Video Hyperlink" - where you can click the clothing worn by people in a video
and get more (text) information about it.
* "Video Hypertext" - where you can simply add comments to videos to help text
based search engines to index & search videos by keywords or tags.
Needless
to mention, all technologies are yet to be "perfected".
U.S. Television
Ad Rates On the Rise Meanwhile it is boom time for TV ad
sales for
the U.S. fall season. And U.S. television networks are apparently quoting rates
which are distinctly higher than those quoted in 2006.
Coming out of lean

Automated
Online Trading, Anyone ? Dow Jones & Co. has just announced its latest
"elementized" news feed. Basically readable by computer software, the future news
data feed will enable automated trading softwares to directly "interpret" headlines
based on pre-set triggers & complete a trade transaction in milli seconds, without
any human intervention.
At this rate, today's highly paid investment analysts
may have to find jobs with software developers ! |
