Mobile media co. '3' recently launched the world's 1st TVprogram
which is based on user feedback via 3G handsets. 3's mobile video
blogging technology provides a way to watch TV programs on (3G)
cellphones and respond to options, which are an integral part of
the mobile programming. Moreover, users can also upload video clips
along with their feedback.
Thus TV programs are extended to a digital discussion platform.
While the success is yet to be measured, it is significant to note
that the mobile premiere on 3G has preceded the terrestrial TV premiere
(on Channel 4) as well as the Digital TV premiere on MTV Base.
Meanwhile, Vodafone Sweden has recently announced live mobile TV
Channel.
And mobile video downloads (though still a very small %age of content
downloads) has grown 5 times in the past year.
Based on the above, our team did a quick compilation of mobile medium
predictions from various sources.
Mobile Video
Mobile video is said to takeover the wireless industry in the next
2 years (2006 - 2007). Almost all future mobile handsets will feature
video or at least a camera. TV channels have started embracing mobile
video. It started with Korea, but today global TV channels like
CNN, MTV & Warner Brothers have accepted mobile video as the next
exciting channel for delivery.
Mobile video downloads will be driven by music, sports, TV serials
& news clips. Meanwhile, video downloads will rule the roost.
Ringtones
The
market share of ringtones (which controls major share of mobile
content market today), is expected to go down to 25% by 2007 - because
of music & video.
Mobile Music
Mobile phones are replacing personal audio systems. Nearly 20%
of mobile users reportedly prefer their handsets to listen to music.
(The popularity of ringtones was the first to herald mobile music.)
The music industry will start using all technologies like WiFi,
GSM & CDMA.
Motorola RokR is the 1st handset which connects with iTunes. Expect
many more along the same lines.
Free Voice Calls
The new model will be free voice services with advertising & data
as the main revenues. EBay's recent acquisition of Skype should
expedite the new business model.
Mobile
Broadband
3G, WiFi, EV-DO & CDMA technology will compete with cable & DSL
for broadband services.
Mobile
TV Guides
Daily TV Guides data will be available on cellphones.
The
New Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNOs)
MVNOs will offer a combination of VoIP, mobile voice, mobile data
over WiFi.
