This
week we take a break from media & technology for a (refreshing!)
change.
We all constantly fight impediments to achieve our goals. But most
of us have no clear idea of the looming obstacles. While the pre-destined
cannot be circumvented, here is a list of 6 'generic' obstacles
which are universally applicable.
Taken from the ancient Indian science of Yoga, these form
a part of the scientific treatment of obstacles to the progress
of any practicing yogi.
Obstacle
1: Disease of Body & Mind
An
unhealthy body or mind can become the first major obstacle in achieving
any goal. It should come as no surprise that Yoga first concentrates
on creating a healthy, disease-free body & mind. (Unfortunately,
for the same reason, Yoga is incorrectly portrayed as merely a set
of exercises for physical well-being, whereas it’s scope encompasses
much, much more.)
Obstacle
2: Incorrect Concepts, Methods & Results
The
second obstacle is lack of clarity in concepts & methods, along
with false notions. Clear concepts and correct vision cannot be
over-emphasized!
(Note: Both lack of confidence and over-confidence come from incorrect
concepts & methods which result in over- or under- estimating the
effort.)
Obstacle
3: Inertia
A
third obstacle is our natural disinclination towards accepting change.
Awareness of this trait helps fight it.
Obstacle
4: Excessive Self-doubt
Doubt
is healthy up to a point. Beyond that it may be detrimental to progress.
Believe in the goal & believe in yourself to give it your best shot.
Obstacle
5: Lack of Dispassion
Too much attachment to (other) objects can distract from goals.
So stand back and observe dispassionately every now & then.
Obstacle
6: Discouragement due to Non-attainment
Sometimes disappointment arising out of non-attainment of goals
within the time frame becomes a major obstacle. To set achievable
goals, reasonable time frames are a must. Unreasonable time-frames
are usually the result of lack of guidance (training).
Force
Majeure
Sometimes, despite following all the right steps, repeated efforts
become necessary to achieve goals. But being beyond our control,
there’s nothing to be done but keep a margin for such possibilities.
Force majeure & providence are very well illustrated by this verse
from Thomas Hardy’s poem
The Titanic:
“And as the smart ship grew
In stature, grace & hue,
In shadowy silent distance
Grew the iceberg too”
